Miracle in the whelping box

I knew it was going to be a long night, but I had no idea of the miracle we would see at sunrise!

Two months prior to our 30th anniversary my husband Darin made the trek to Harrodsburg, Kentucky, to introduce our Addie (Ch GapView’s Adrenaline Rush) to Cup (Cupcake des Vignes Rouges) and sixty-three days later we were delivering puppies!  We’re a long ways from being experts in the dog world but this wasn’t our first rodeo, if you know what I mean!  However, this was definitely our most arduous and nail-biting puppy-birthing experience.

The first two pups were born on the way to the vet so we delivered them and returned home for the next seven which came at varying intervals.  After several conversations with Dr. Kleisch, we decided it was time to pack up Addie and the puppies and head to the After Hours Emergency Vet Clinic. X-rays showed two more puppies, but one of them was stuck.  An emergency C-Section was the only solution.  If all went well, Addie could still nurse the puppies but we would have to fill in the gap with bottle feeding.

Let me just say that the bottle feeding was not going well.

We stayed at the clinic until we knew that Addie was out of the woods.  Her mother Jazz (Ch Firesides Jazzberry Jam) was at home wondering why in the world she had been sentenced to outside, only to become a window peeper if she was to figure out what was going on.   Since Addie was recovering at the vet’s office, we let Jazz inside once we got the puppies settled back into their whelping pool.  She immediately went to the puppies and started cleaning them up.  That was fine with me, but what happened next was absolutely astonishing!

The puppies found comfort in the warm fuzzy body snuggling with them so they inched their way to a nursing station.  At first, I though, “Oh how sweet!  This won’t last long when they realize that nothing’s there!”  But there was!  Each one of those puppies was getting milk!

What an amazing God we serve!  He cares so much for ALL of His creation.  He made these animals in such a way that they could nurse another’s young and provide life-sustaining nourishment.  I sat in the floor that night reflecting on the beauty of God’s creation and how intricately He has designed all of us.

Jazz nursed those puppies until we brought Addie home later that morning.  It took her a few days to realize that they weren’t hers, but that’s another Dose for another day!

From my heart to yours,

Tami
